We’re heading back to Decatur, Indiana again this summer to help host scratch tile workshops and organize the ladle crews for the 2nd annual Hoosier Pattern Pour, happening on Friday, June 7, 2024 at Hoosier Pattern Inc. The iron pour starts in the early evening light and ends with the spectacular contrast of bright sparks and flames to light up the night.
FeLion will be leading two scratch mold workshops on Friday starting at 10am and 1pm. Registration link is below to save your seat at either session! After carving is complete, participants can bring their molds out to the pour floor in preparation to watch us cast molten iron into each of them. On Saturday we’ll have everyone’s pieces cleaned up and on display during the annual Sculpture Tour in downtown Decatur, IN. More info on that below.
Printed Sand Molds
Cool tech for everyone’s enjoyment!
What’s so groovy about the Hoosier Pattern Iron Pour is that the scratch molds are made using 3D printed sand mold technology, which is a specialty at Hoosier Pattern, allowing creativity to take the lead and design incredibly complex and intricate ideas for metal casting. The sand has a very fine grain allowing for high detail to be achieved during the carving process.
When the molds are poured, they create a super clean and detailed recording of the images carved into them. The finished castings that participants make are incredibly unique recordings of hand-carved imagination that can be taken home after the Saturday event.
Sculpture Tour & Casting Display
On Saturday, June 8th, all of the finished castings from the iron pour will be on display downtown in tandem with Decatur’s annual Sculpture Tour exhibition, where several large scale sculptures get installed on main street, and revealed at 3pm. The street will be lined with fantastic life sized pieces from professional sculptors all across the country, and hundreds of the community-made iron castings poured the night before.
It’s a weekend filled with family-friendly action, tons of hands on opportunities to make and see sculpture, and enjoy an array of food trucks, kids activities, and an up-close opportunity to watch molten metal pour into everyone’s molds on Friday night.
